Under the spell of a melody

While it is unlikely that the iconic “Here Comes the Sun” was written about this sunny isle, the property along sensational Intendance Bay once belonged to Beatle guitarist George Harrison and British actor Peter Sellers, aka Inspector Clouseau. Today Mahé Island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is home to the Banyan Tree Resort.

The generously spaced villas are set to a unique musical score: melodious and extremely harmonious with a laid-back tempo. And so very private. Some are on the beach, others on a slight rise, and all offer a lovely view without putting you on display. Outfitted in colonial style, each villa has a private dipping pool and many a whirlpool as well. You might be forgiven for thinking the pools outnumber the beach,  which is public by the way. The impressive 23-metre-long infinity pool is members only, as is the luxurious spa. Thai experts trained in the Banyan Tree Phuket retune body and soul with treatments in the open-air pagoda. Treat your palate as well with contemporary, Thai-inspired cuisine and African and Mediterranean delicacies.
